The Salton Sea
So a few weeks ago, I traveled to the Salton Sea and was amazed at just how big it is. I found lots of abandoned places, dead fish and some strange vibes from this abandoned desert oasis.
The Salton is actually an ancient lake bed that fills up when the Colorado River floods its banks. Back in the early 1900’s the government, in an attempt to bring irrigation to the rich desert soil, channeled the river. Well, the river eventually broke free and filled up the Salton lake bed. The Salton then became the new Palm Springs, but eventually agriculture runoff started killing the fish and the sea began to rise and flood the surrounding resorts and homesteads. many people lost a lot of their hopes and dreams here. There are a lot of abandonments here to check out. Before he died, Sonny Bono was making strides to clean up the sea, but since his death, not much has been done to save it.
Its really quiet out here. Seeing all of these buildings is strange. You can tell that at one time, this was a really happening place.

If you go: Wear hiking boots and be sure and check out Salvation Mountain in Niland, California.

If you haven’t already covered them (I haven’t searched your blog yet), there are quite a few ‘abandoned’ little towns along Route 66, which died after being bypassed by the I-40.
Another cool one is Verde Hot Springs, on the site of an old abandoned resort! Here’s a link if you want to read more:
